Jonkeria truculenta

Another of the extraordinary non-mammalian Synapsids; Jonkeria was a large, probably omnivorous animal known as a Titanosuchid. Little is known about these animals; it was once believed they were strict predators; with long powerful skulls and pointed canines, but the heavyset and robust post-cranial anatomy of Jonkeria (the most well known member of the family) is more similar to that of a herbivore. This might suggest they were bear or boar-like omnivores; eating plant and animal matter, and possibly using their large size to intimidate smaller predators away from kills/carrion. Remains of Jonkeria are known from the Middle Permian, South Africa.
